Mahatma Gandhi's vision of India included establishing Hindi as the national language. He had said that without a national language, any nation becomes mute. At the first World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur (January 10-14, 1975), a resolution was passed to recognize Hindi as an official language in the United Nations and to establish an International Hindi University with its headquarters in Wardha. At the second World Hindi Conference held in Mauritius in August 1976, it was decided to establish a World Hindi Center in Mauritius to coordinate Hindi activities worldwide.
